The Foundation aims to be a catalyst to shape vibrant communities by investing in courageous and effective leadership that significantly strengthens and improves the well-being of the people of Minnesota\, North Dakota\, and South Dakota and in the 23 sovereign tribal nations that share the same geographic area. In 2009\, the Foundation made grants of approximately $35 million.\n\n Prior to coming to the Foundation in December 2007\, Hutchinson was co-founder of the Public Strategies Group\, a St. Paul company that redesigns and transforms governments throughout the world. Hutchinson has also served as the vice president for external affairs for the Dayton Hudson Corporation (now Target) and chairman of the Dayton Hudson Foundation\, commissioner of finance for the State of Minnesota\, superintendent of the Minneapolis Public Schools\, and as a deputy mayor in Minneapolis. In 2006\, he was the Independence Party candidate for Minnesota governor.
